The October 2026 price cap: what changed and why
From 1 October 2026 the Ofgem price cap rose 4% to £1,723 per year for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit, up £60 from the July level. On the older consumption assumptions used for historical comparisons, the same rates work out at approximately £1,935. The cap does not limit your total bill. It sets the maximum unit rate and standing charge your supplier can apply on standard variable tariffs.
Electricity and gas moved differently this quarter. Electricity's unit rate rose only slightly and its standing charge fell, partly because VAT on domestic electricity dropped to 0% from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Gas absorbed the full wholesale-driven increase. Fixed tariffs from several suppliers remain priced below the October cap. The gap between the cheapest available fixed deal and the cap rate is around £160 a year for a typical household, based on live comparison figures checked across several UK regions.
